Psychology of Flowers and Colour
Psychology of Flowers and Colour
Flowers and plants have long been known to provide therapeutic properties. Any visual representation of the natural world or flora promotes calmness and relaxation. Interestingly, studies have proven that both fresh and faux flowers and plants have similar effects on wellbeing. According to research, the visual appeal of both real and faux flowers and foliage have the following impact:
- Elicit positive emotion
- Lessen feelings of stress
- Lower levels of anxiety
- Improved mood
- Enhanced creativity
- Enhanced productivity
Furthermore, studies confirm that colour, space and form impacts psychological functioning, affect, cognition, and behaviour. Colour carries meaning and its effects are context specific. The same colour can have different meanings in different contexts, leading to different implications. (Elliot & Maier, 2014) Colour also influences consumer behaviour (Sable & Akcay, 2011). Thus, our Florella Consultation Experience draws upon this research to ensure that the floral designs we craft for you, reflect the essence of who you are and the experience you wish to create in your home, work space or special event.
The Wellbeing Impact
The Wellbeing Impact
Scientists and researchers concur that one of the easiest ways to reduce tension and anxiety is by having flowers and foliage nearby. Studies show that most of the psychological benefits are tied to seeing them in your surroundings. Thus, faux flowers and foliage offer similar wellbeing benefits when placed in the field of view, and this is one of the many reasons why we mainly use faux. Flowers and foliage also contain soothing colours and fractal patterns, naturally occurring repetitive patterns that are aesthetically pleasing and calming.
Research done in hospitals, offices, and schools proves that even a single plant in a room, whether real or faux, can reduce stress, anxiety, blood pressure, and pain while also improving mood. Moreover, lower levels of blood pressure and less pain, lower levels of anxiety, distress, and physical discomfort have been reported by patients who had either fresh or faux blooms in their line of sight during their time in recovery.
Decorating your home, office or retail space with faux florals can make people feel calmer and help reduce tension levels significantly. Having bright flowers and greenery in workspaces improves memory, increases the attention span by about 20%, and helps nurture unique and innovative ideas. In retail settings, introducing foliage was found to elicit pleasure and to reduce stress in a “complex” shop interior.
Why choose faux?
Why choose faux?
- Faux florals are low maintenance while adding all the beauty and splendour of nature.
- They are long lasting, they won't wilt and provide constant year-round beauty.
- They make precious keepsakes that preserve your beautiful memories.
- Faux flowers and foliage give wellbeing benefits for a fraction of the energy and cost required to maintain their real counterparts.
- They are allergen free.
- Artificial flowers have less ecological footprint. Although fresh flowers are biodegradable, the chemicals in fertilizers and pesticides needed to grow them are not.
- They help create an elegant and breathtaking interior addition and affect our moods and overall mental health!
Floriography: The Language of Flowers
Floriography: The Language of Flowers
Every flower in the art of floriography has a unique symbolism or significance, which can also be impacted by the variety and colour of the flower. The language of flowers dates back centuries and has largely been embedded in our psyche through society, cultural practice and the media.
Ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Chinese mythologies, folklore, sonnets, and plays are abundant with flower and plant meaning and symbolism. In Victorian times, messages that couldn't be uttered openly were mainly conveyed through flowers. During Queen Victoria’s reign, flowers were used to communicate feelings that the strict etiquette of the time did not allow to be openly expressed. Today, flowers still offer a remarkably subtle form of communication. Some flowers, such as roses, poppies, and lilies, may convey a variety of emotions based on colour. Let us take a look at the rose and see how the message changes according to its colour:
- White rose: purity, innocence, reverence, hope, new beginning, fresh start
- Red rose: romantic love, passion, desire
- Deep, dark crimson rose: mourning
- Pink rose: grace, happiness, gentleness, sweetness
- Hot pink rose: deep appreciation and gratitude with a sense of strength and conviction
- Yellow rose: friendship, cheerfulness, welcome
- Orange rose: desire, enthusiasm, creativity
- Lavender rose: love at first sight, budding romance
- Peach rose: appreciation, gratitude
At Florella, we understand the language of flowers well. Let us help you choose the flowers that convey exactly what you have in your mind and heart.
Wedding Flower Choices
Wedding Flower Choices
Although flowers are a crucial component of a wedding's decor, you might not be aware of the significant role they can play in the day's narrative. There are many symbolic meanings associated with flowers (see Floriography blog post). Consider creating your wedding floral arrangements with their meanings as a deciding element rather than just focusing on the flowers and colours you like on your big day.
Furthermore, beyond the conventional interpretations of flowers, couples should consider any sentimental connections they may have with certain blooms. Your wedding flowers should exude joy and a sense of who you are as a couple. You should feel inspired to include the meaning you relate to particular flowers into your own bridal bouquets, boutonnieres, and table centrepieces.
Consider the royal flower bouquet from Prince William and Kate Middleton's nuptials as an illustration. She carried a bouquet made entirely of white flowers, including lilies of the valley (representing trustworthiness, purity), sweet William (gallantry), hyacinth (loveliness), myrtle (love in marriage), and ivy (continuity). Together, the symbolic meanings of these flowers express the desire for a devoted, enduring union. Prince William wore a flower from the bridal bouquet in his buttonhole. The custom of wearing his Lady's colours to show his love and devotion, dates back to the mediaeval era.
The Florella Consultation Experience will help you in choosing the perfect flowers for your special day!
Choosing a Wedding Colour Palette
Choosing a Wedding Colour Palette
A wedding colour palette is a collection of hues that are utilised in various ways on your wedding day. It is also referred to as a wedding colour scheme or wedding colour combination. Your wedding's colours are incorporated into practically every aspect of the celebration, including the invitations, floral arrangements, tablecloths, apparel, wedding cake, and perhaps even unexpected touches like your signature drinks or wedding favours.
Your wedding's colour scheme ought to be inspired by who you are as a couple. It should flow cohesively to provide inspiration for the atmosphere, mood, emotions, and memories you wish to evoke on your wedding day. For example, dark jewel tones convey a majestic, regal feel, while pastels produce an airy, romantic atmosphere.
The Florella Consultation Experience is an excellent way to choose your wedding colour palette. It draws on your personalities, aesthetics, colour, mood, emotions and floriography to help you make the perfect choice for your special day. We also take into consideration other factors such as type of wedding, location, season and all other aspects unique to you!
